Khen Rinpoche Lobzang Tsetan to join Dalai Lama in Upcoming International Conference on Tibetan Buddhism at Emory University

Dear friends of Khen Rinpoche and the Panchen Lama Tashi Lhunpo Project,
We are happy to announce that Khen Rinpoche will be joining His Holiness the Dalai Lama to participate in the upcoming International Conference on Tibetan Buddhism, which will be held at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, from October 18-20, 2010. The conference will be inaugurated by His Holiness, who will preside over the opening session, and will feature other dignitaries such as the Kalon Tripa Samdhong Rinpoche, Lodi Gyari Rinpoche, and H.E. the Ganden Tripa Rizong Rinpoche, along with a host of other masters, scholars, translators, and leaders of the Tibetan Buddhist world from Asia, Europe, and North and South America.

Attendance is open to all who are interested in the preservation and future of Tibetan Buddhism, and we hope some of you will be able to join Khen Rinpoche at this important conference. As the Office of Tibet, co-host of the conference, writes: "After fifty years, the dissemination of Tibetan Buddhism in the modern world is no longer in its infancy, but has reached a crucial intermediate stage. Having established itself and laid down roots outside of traditionally Tibetan Buddhist areas through the efforts of many teachers, and particularly His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the time has come for teachers and students of Tibetan Buddhism to consider its future direction, with an eye to ensuring that the tradition continues to grow as a beneficial force for the peace, well-being and happiness of humanity."

The conference features opening and closing sessions, as well as six panels split over three sessions that cover a range of important themes facing Tibetan Buddhism in the modern world. The panel sessions are organized to include ample time for discussion and participation. The panel Khen Rinpoche will be participating in is "Surviving Modernity in Traditionally Tibetan Buddhist Regions."

In addition to this conference, His Holiness the Dalai Lama will be participating in a number of other events while he is at Emory University, most notably a full-day conference on October 18 on "Compassion Meditation: Mapping Current Research and Charting Future Directions," which immediately precedes the opening of the International Conference on Tibetan Buddhism. Conference registrants who purchase their registration prior to October 1 will also have the option of receiving a complimentary ticket to His Holiness's teaching on "The Nature and Practice of Compassion" on the morning of October 17.
